It alarms me

how easily ya’ll can sympathise with:

Zombies
Mutants
Vampires
Aliens
Werewolves
etc

But simultaneously fail to sympathise or be moved by the real life struggles of PoC. Like, an hour into X-Men you appreciate the dynamics & pitfalls of an improperly integrated mutant/human society, perhaps why there are strong, sweeping resentment issues.. but not ever will you attempt to give us the same courtesy.

Alice Walker defined colourism (also spelled colorism) as “prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color” in In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens. Colourism prevails intraracially and interracially for Black people because of the same reasons; the dominance of Eurocentric beauty myths via White supremacy, external racism by Whites and internalized racism by Blacks, and rigid notions of femininity and masculinity as it pertains to race and complexion. Though these 6 reads above present a plethora of topics, revealing the intersectional experiences of Black women, all of them elaborate on colourism quite well and are critical reads. The first two are non-fiction, latter 4 are novels. MUST READ.

I’ve also written a few essays that elaborate on colourism and its impact on beauty and more (and some of these essays on natural hair also touch on the topic):

The television industry is one of the most segregated industries in America today. There is not a major industry of its size that exists in the world that is as segregated. You can see Black executives at Daimler-Chrysler or American Express, but you would be hard pressed to find more than one or two people in the entertainment world. What frustrates me is that as astute as we claim to be with all of our modern technology moving around, we have forgotten one of the oldest rules articulated by Frederick Douglass: ‘Power gives up nothing without demand.’ Some of the highest paid performers are Black. [White executives] will give you all the money you can hold, but when you ask for power, you get a blank look. Think about that, ‘The thing of value is not the money but the power.’ I’ll tell you what, ‘You give me the power, I’ll make my own money.’ - Tim Reid

Free Angela & all political prisoners coming to theaters in many U.S. cities starting April 5.

Here’s the Facebook page (where I got the pictures).

From the IMDB:

A documentary that chronicles the life of young college professor Angela Davis, and how her social activism implicates her in a botched kidnapping attempt that ends with a shootout, four dead, and her name on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list.

Here’s a link to the compelling, exciting trailer.

I really wanted to draw Toothiana’s design from her concept art. Both versions are absolutely gorgeous.

Now this is how she is supposed to look like. Not as a white character, but a brown Southeast Asian as she is a Southeast Asian character and her palace is in Southeast Asia. Was sadly disappointed when they made her a white character instead.
